5 Ways to Lower Your Freight Class (and Your LTL Bill)
Updated October 14, 2026
With density setting the class for most freight, small physical changes can move you down a tier, and lower classes generally mean lower rates.
- Restack lower. Height is usually the easiest dimension to change. The calculator tells you the exact height needed for the next class.
- Consolidate. Two half-full pallets are almost always less dense than one full one.
- Eliminate overhang. Overhang adds volume and no weight.
- Right-size the pallet. A 48 × 40 base under a 40 × 32 load wastes density.
- Cut empty space in cartons. Less void fill means smaller cartons and a tighter pallet.
Check you're near a boundary first: a pallet at 7.9 PCF is one small change from class 100, while one at 6.1 PCF isn't. The bulk tool flags the closest wins across your whole list.
