Updated October 14, 2026
Both systems punish light, bulky shipments, but they work differently and apply to different services.
| LTL freight class | Parcel DIM weight | |
|---|---|---|
| Used for | Palletized freight, usually 150 lb or more | Boxes shipped by UPS, FedEx, USPS |
| Key number | Density (lb/ft³) | L × W × H ÷ divisor |
| Result | Class 50 to 400, which sets the rate per hundredweight | Billable weight in lb |
| Rules set by | NMFC / your carrier's tariff | Each carrier's service guide |
The crossover zone
Shipments of roughly 100 to 300 lb can sometimes go either way: several heavy parcels or one small pallet. Calculate both and compare quotes. The bulk tool gives you freight class and parcel billable weight side by side for every row.
